How to Measure a Motorhome for a Custom Protective Cover

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a useful custom motorhome cover. A cover that is too short may leave panels exposed, while excessive loose material can move in the wind. Before ordering, prepare a simple measurement record that includes the vehicle body and the equipment that must remain covered.

Measure the overall length

Measure from the furthest front body point to the furthest rear body point. Decide in advance whether the measurement should include a rear ladder, spare-wheel carrier, bike rack, or other permanently installed accessory. Write down the measurement and the accessories included.

Measure the width

Measure the widest body section, including mirrors only if the cover is intended to pass over them. Note the location of slide-outs, awnings, side storage doors, and other protruding components. These features can affect the required pattern and fastening arrangement.

Measure the height

Measure from the ground to the highest fixed point, such as a roof air-conditioning unit, satellite equipment, or raised roof section. If an accessory is removable, record both the installed and removed configurations so the cover requirements are clear.

Take photographs and label the details

  • Photograph the front, rear, both sides, roofline, and major accessories.
  • Mark each measurement with its unit and direction.
  • Identify sharp corners, ladders, mirrors, vents, and access doors.
  • Explain whether the RV will be stored outdoors, under a shelter, or indoors.

JK Covers can review vehicle-cover requirements through the Vehicle Covers category. Providing complete measurements and photographs helps the team evaluate the appropriate custom-fit approach.
